When I first met with Mason & Stacey, I had a really strong feeling that they were my people. As a dabbler into photography himself, Mason was tasked with the job of finding potential photographers for their wedding. He noticed things about my images that most people wouldn’t. The way I used natural light, use of color, and my use of off-camera-flash… all important things for their Vail mountain wedding in the fall. But mostly, it was great how easily we all hit it off with each other. For their Colorado Mountain engagement photos, we landed on a January date & Lost Gulch Overlook up Flagstaff Mountain in Boulder with our fingers crossed it wouldn’t be totally freezing. Thankfully, it was half-way the case.
Mason & Stacey met through mutual friends but were friends for a while. Once they began dating, they realized their mutual love for scotch & mountains and noticed how well they fit in with each others family & friends. They got engaged in Steamboat on a hike in fall of 2016.
At the engagement session, I loved their sense of adventure. We came up on this fallen tree and were figuring out how to work it in to the photos when Mason offered for them to climb it. Sometimes I have to gently nudge people out of their comfort zones, but not Stacey & Mason!
A pretty bright day out, I knew we wanted to save the soft sunset light for the mountain view spot. We headed up to Lost Gulch Overlook just in time. There was quite a crowd but it began to thin when the wind picked up as the sun dipped behind the mountains giving us this gorgeous light over the snow dusted hills. Mason & Stacey were troopers as we scrambled over the rocks and dodged other tourists to get some photos. The sky & wind did their thing!
