Alicia & Michael – wow what an incredible shoot! We had an early season slushy snowfall that morning & were unsure if conditions would prevent us from heading into the mountains. It cleared up by the early afternoon, so we decided to brave the weather & hit the road to Evergreen. That’s the risk you take when you try for Colorado mountain engagement photos! But as usual, I’m getting ahead of myself because the story of how I met them is pretty cool….
Flash back almost 3 years ago to the beach in Cabo. My husband & I had vacationed there for the first time in the middle of my busy wedding season. In all candidness, the vacation was pretty rough thus far – expired sunblock left us burned to crisps, a hurricane canceled the snorkeling tour we had scheduled, and then my phone was stolen from the resort where we stayed, etc. etc. First world problems, right?
We headed for the beach to watch a “honey” moon rise out of the ocean – the last full moon on a Friday the 13th for the next 35 years! We sat & enjoyed the waves on our last night of the trip when we noticed another couple nearby and recruited them to take our photo. I returned the favor and mentioned I was a wedding photographer. We quickly hit it off & learned that Alicia grew up in Memphis but that she & Micael now also live in Denver. She was a fellow former southerner turned Coloradan. Small world! They were celebrating her finishing pharmacy school. We both left the next morning, but connected on Facebook & kept in touch until one day last summer, I received a picture of Alicia’s hand with a ring on it!

At the engagement session, I got to know more about them. They both come from large families. Micael was born in Eritrea and came with his parents to the US – Rapid City – when he was very young. They described the traditional Eritrean entry to their reception they will have. I have to tell you – I’m SO excited to see this with my own eyes. I don’t want to give too much away but it involves song, dance, a sword, and a spoon.
It feels appropriate to end this with a photo of the moon from the night we met! I can’t wait to celebrate with you in August, Alicia & Micael!
